The Standard Club

The Standard Club was established in September 1901 and joined the Texas Federation in 1904. It became an active participant in the General Federation of Women's Clubs’ ongoing initiative to support public libraries by helping provide books and services to the local community.

In a pivotal moment for Winnsboro, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated $10,000 in 1910 for the construction of a public library. His gift came with the stipulation that the funds be used solely for the building itself, and that the City would assume full responsibility for its operation. At the time of its opening, the City could only furnish the library with a desk, a few bookshelves, and chairs.

Recognizing the need, the Standard Club stepped in to ensure the library’s success. The Club appointed and paid the salary of the first librarian and led efforts to collect donations of books and funds from the community.

The library began with fewer than 200 volumes. Over the years, the Standard Club has continued its support by organizing annual fundraising events—initially held at the Carnegie Library or in members’ homes, and since 1996, at the Gilbreath Memorial Library. Club members have also served as dedicated volunteers and advocates for literacy, supporting programs that enrich the lives of both children and adults in the community.
